Dont Say Majek Fashek's Death Was A Loss To The Nation

I wrote this post with an inspiration from his 1988 album Prisoner of Conscience and am glad i downloaded the full album.

Like many forgotten super stars, Majek Fashek is still alive and living in Nigeria but no one is celebrating this celebrity anymore. I read with shock a post by one Joseph Edgar, an investment banker and blogger, who shamelessly gave a narrative of how he ran into the Nigerian music legend in Lagos. [Read the story here; Majek Fashek: From Nigerian Music Legend To Beggar ] . In His story, Joseph Edgar bragged of how he bought Mr. Fashek Ogogoro for N100 and the emptiness he saw in Mr. Fasheks current state. Well, it is worthy of note that Majek Fashek isnt the first celebrity to be in this state, stories similar to his are mostly found in the USA and sometimes such situations are far worse while in other cases there are bounce backs.

Majek Fashek has worked quite hard and has been a voice in the Nigerian Music Industry since the 1970s and this is not a record you sweep under your carpet.

it is worthy of note that Majek Fashek has worked with the likes of including Tracy Chapman, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Jackson(Yes, the one you know), Snoop Dogg, and Beyoncé. And quite unfortunately, this man just recently got rehabilitation from a hospital in abuja and Nigerians in their usual character wrote him and his legacies off. why wont Mr. Fashek go through rehab??? why wont he?

When his Music is no more in the ears of Nigerians, why wont he? when he can't seem to dream anymore., why wont he? when he feels empty and has no inspiration anymore.

There is a popular Tiv name 'Keghku', it means 'waiting for death'. Am sure you're asking why would someone bear such a name? Here's the thing, it is used in the context of "I lived a full life, achieved all my goals and Keghku". I believe such is the story of Mr. Fashek.

While he is ignored by Nigerians today, when he dies, same Nigerians including Mr. President will turn poetic on him and shower him with poems he won't hear and trust our BBM and Facebook folks, some will even come up with the humorous 'Who be dis Fashek Majek man wey everybody dey put for DP sef' Joke.

To people like John Edgar, who didnt have the decency to buy Mr. Fashek a beer 'SHAME'.

To the Nigerian Government, Please find a way to bless this man before he dies or else the president ahouldnt release a statement saying "his loss is a loss to not only his family but a great loss to the nation" when he dies.

Find below some of Mr. Fashek's pictures (old or new) below;
