DANGERS OF SLEEPING WITHOUT BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

While there is no precise timeline of when plaque becomes risky, you can start the process of a cavity by not brushing once. VICTOR OKEKE writes on why we should brush before sleep.

Most people are shocked to hear this, but going to bed without brushing your teeth is like going to bed with faeces in your mouth according to dentists.

How can that be? Every time you have a meal, the bacteria that naturally reside in your mouth feast on the food you eat. Just like every other living organism, these bacteria excrete waste after a meal. This waste is highly acidic and breaks down tooth enamel, causing root decay and cavities.

Brushing is important for reasons beyond fresh breath. Skip a session, and you are on your way to encouraging the growth of bacterial buildup in the form of plaque, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.

According an article by Dr. Mark Burhenne, a family health dentist, “When you hit the sack without brushing, plaque starts to harden and calcify on your teeth. Once plaque has calcified, it’s impossible to remove with a toothbrush and floss and can only be removed by the hygienist during a teeth cleaning.”

It gets worse. The gums see plaque buildup as an infection, so your immune system springs into action to attack that infection. By attacking the plaque buildup, your body starts to destroy the healthy tissues that hold your teeth in place, making the gums begin to pull away from the tooth.

Inflammation is a good thing that lets your body protect itself, but it can cause damage when it’s present for the long term. When you have the flu, inflammation destroys foreign invaders to get you healthy again. But imagine having the flu for years. Chronic inflammation puts extreme wear and tear on the body and studies have linked chronic inflammation in the mouth to hearing loss, dementia, and heart disease.

Okay, but is all this going to happen in just one night? No, but if you make a habit of not brushing and flossing before bed, this will absolutely happen over time.

So if it comes down to washing your face, changing into your pajamas, or brushing and flossing, you know which one I recommend. Taking two minutes to brush and floss before bed will save you years of pain and even extend your life.

Dr. Burhenne recommends what to do when you’re too exhausted to brush before bed.

Keep a toothbrush in the drawer of your nightstand. You don’t need toothpaste; just do a quick, gentle dry brush while you’re lying in bed. I use a snap-on sanitizer to keep it clean and smelling fresh despite the lack of toothpaste.

Keep a flossing stick in the drawer of your nightstand. You can also floss with one hand while you’re lying in bed. Just grab the stick and bite down on the floss.

Run your tongue over your teeth. Feel that? That’s called plaque and it’s like dense, low-cost housing for bacteria. The longer you let plaque sit in your teeth, the more you let the bacteria to proliferate and take hold in your mouth. Run your tongue over your teeth to create the habit; after a while, you’ll start to crave the feeling of slippery, clean teeth before you pass out in bed.

Also, no cheating: Gum, mints and mouthwash are no brushing replacements. All three can give your mouth a fresher feel, says Sahota, but “brushing and flossing are the only ways to effectively, physically remove the plaque.”

We all know what alcohol can do to your body. In the short term, it makes you drunk, and in the slightly longer term, it makes you hungover. But what even longer term effects does drinking too much alcohol have on your body?

There are obvious negative effects of alcohol, like liver problems, skin problems, and circulation problems, not to mention weight gain and a decrease in motor functions. But what are the other ways alcohol hurts? Ibrahim Hanouneh, MD, who works in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Cleveland Clinic, shares some lesser­-known problems associated with alcohol consumption.

1. Alcohol takes priority. When you consume any alcohol, your body makes breaking down the alcohol its top priority. Your body cannot store alcohol (like with proteins, carbs, and fats), so your liver works extra hard to detoxify your entire body by removing the alcohol from the blood. This slows down and confuses the body which is why you get drunk, and because your liver has to work so hard, it is more likely to be problematic later.

2. Bacteria grows in your gut. Alcohol abuse often leads to intestinal bacteria growth. These bacteria can migrate through the intestinal wall. This is problematic on its own, but when the bacteria gets into the liver it can cause serious damage. Even a single night of drinking can damage the intestinal lining.

3. Your heart will become weakened. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to a weak heart (cardiomyopathy), irregular patterns (arrhythmia), or high blood pressure.

4. You’ll develop pancreatitis. Your pancreas produces insulin, which allows the food you eat to be used as energy. 5. Risk for cancer. Cancer of the mouth, esophagus, throat, breast, and, of course, liver, have been associated with alcoholism.

6. A stressed immune system. Drinking alcohol, especially binge drinking, stresses your entire system. A stressed immune system opens the body to infection, disease, and worse.

Doctors suggest drinking red wine can be good for you, but I would still take caution. Dr. Hanouneh says healthy people can still drink, but certainly not every day, or even most days of the week. All this said, alcohol is best avoided, but can be fine in moderation.

Alcohol addiction is a slippery slope that can lead to pancreatitis, liver failure and worse. There are also links to dementia and Alzheimer’s. Drinking alcohol has massive health implications that are hard, if not impossible to reverse.

NYSC EXPLAINS DELAYED CORPS MEMBERS JANUARY ALLOWANCE

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Thursday urged corps members to remain calm over delay in payment of their January allowance.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mrs Bose Aderibigbe, 2016 on February 4, Director Media and Publicity of the corps, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.

It attributed the delay to discrepancies in planning figures for 2016 from the NYSC, Ministry of Budget and National Planning, and the Ministry of Finance, respectively.

The statement said that the management of the scheme regretted the delay.

It assured that it was working to ensure all corps members received their allowance within a week.
